  • International Day of Non-Violence Against Women- Every year, Nuevo Amanecer organizes the Annual International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to commemorate the lives of our heroines the Mirabal sisters. The Mirabal sisters were four Dominican political dissidents who fought for their country's freedom, and opposed the dictatorship of Rafael LeonidasTrujillo. Consequently, they were persecuted, incarcerated in various occassions, and three of the sisters were brutally assassinated on November 25, 1960. Thus, in 1999, the United Nations General Assembly designated November 25 (the anniversary of the murder of the Mirabal sisters) as the annual date of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in their honor.
