What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic Violence is coercive and controlling behavior that can involve physical, sexual, emotional, economic and psychological abuse. Domestic Violence can affect people of all ages, genders, race, socioeconomic, religious, ethnic and educational backgrounds. However, women are by far the most common victims. According to the American Medical Association, approximately one in four women in the country will be the victim of domestic violence during her lifetime.

Program Description?

Nuevo Amanecer (New Dawn) is a comprehensive domestic violence program created by the Dominican Women's Development Center in 1998 to empower Latina women living in the Washington Heights/Inwood community of New York to end abusive relationships.

Our Services

24 Hour Hotline (212) 568-6616

- The hotline is staffed by Spanish/English speaking counselors who provide counseling, crisis intervention, and information and referral services for legal matters, safety planning and police protection. The hotline es available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Support Groups

- These groups provide a safe space in which formerly battered women and women who are currently in violent relationships can convene to share their experiences and offer support to each other in their healing processes.

Information and Referrals

- We provide information/referrals to appropiate services as needed.

Individual Counseling

- This component provides one-to-one support services to women dealing with domestic violence issues.

Advocacy

- Nuevo Amanecer's advocates accompany, advocate on behalf of, and serve as interpreter at various institutions such as criminal courts, police, precints, hospitals and housing centers, with the intent of empowering participants to access such services as independently as possible.

Renacer (Born Again) Program

- This is a comprehensive program for children and adolescents who are witnesses and/or victims of domestic violence. The program offers individual and Group counseling, peer support groups, homework help, information and referrals, video production classes, conflict resolution workshops, and art classes.

Our Goals

  • To help battered women gain control of their lives and make informed decisions about their domestic violence situations.
  • To create a confidential space to more effectively and efficiently serve battered women and their children in the Washington Heights/Inwood communities of Manhattan .
  • To help the criminal justice system respond more efficiently to violence against women, in particular, Latinas.
  • To provide culturally sensitive services
